Los Angeles, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Swimming team fought off a tough challenge from Occidental to capture a 127-104 win in its regular season finale on Saturday.
With the win, the Sagehens improve to 7-1 in dual meets (6-1 against SCIAC opponents), heading into the SCIAC Championships on Feb. 19-21.
Pomona-Pitzer led just 60-59 at the midway point, but junior Charlotte Dohrn (pictured) came away with a tight win in the 200-yard butterfly to keep the Sagehens in front. Sophomore Alex Lincoln followed with a win in the 100-yard freestyle, her second individual win of the day, to give her team some breathing room.
Occidental, though, answered back with wins in the 200-yard backstroke and 200-yard breaststroke to pull within 10 points heading into the final freestyle relay, which was worth 11 points to the winner. Freshmen Nola Shi and Larissa Nakatsu built a lead in the first half, and sophomore Maddy DeMeules helped set up Dohrn in the anchor leg for the win. The Sagehen B team also finished in second, which made the final margin even greater.
Lincoln also won the 200-yard freestyle, while freshman Vicky Gyorffy came in second. Gyorffy had earlier come on first in the 1000-yard freestyle, giving the Sagehens 13 valuable points (nine for winning the 1000, four for second place in the 200).
After sweeping the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events, Lincoln concluded the regular season undefeated in dual competition in both of those events. She did suffer defeats in the 50-yard freestyle over the course of the year, including against Occidental, but was perfect in both the 100 and 200.
Pomona-Pitzer has now defeated Occidental 30 years in a row (a span which stretches from 1983-2012), since the Tigers took a 60-53 decision in 1982. Last year's victory was the closest in that span - a 120-117 win at Haldeman Pool.
