Azusa, Calif. - The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team opened its 2012 spring season with a 6-3 loss to Azusa Pacific on the road on Saturday afternoon.
The Sagehens came into the year ranked No. 8 in the preseason NCAA Division III poll after qualifying for the NCAA Tournament last year, while Azusa Pacific is ranked No. 4 in the NAIA poll.
Senior Tommy Meyer (pictured) paced the Sagehens by giving them their lone win in the singles competition, and then adding a win with fellow senior Uday Singh in doubles. Chris Weichert and Connor Sutton also won their doubles match.
Meyer won his singles match when Janosch Apelt of Azusa Pacific withdrew after the second set with an injury. Apelt took the first set 6-4, but Meyer battled back to level the match at a set apiece with a 7-5 win in the second, winning the last three games to close it out.
Sabel, Sutton and Frankie Allinson all had close first-set battles in their singles competitions, but all three of them fell 6-4 before dropping their matches two sets to none.
The Sagehens will be back in action on Feb. 24-26 at the ITA Indoor Nationals at Kenyon College.
