St. Peter, Minn. - Michael Razumovsky and C.J. Williams won their doubles match in a tiebreaker and their singles matches in three sets to help the No. 7-ranked Kenyon Men's Tennis team to a 6-3 win over No. 8 Pomona-Pitzer in a battle of top 10 teams on Friday at the ITA Indoor Nationals at Gustavus Adolphus.
With the loss, Pomona-Pitzer slips to 0-2 on the young season with both losses 6-3 decisions to top competition. The other came at Azusa Pacific, the fourth-ranked team in NAIA.
The Sagehens won the No. 2 and No. 3 doubles points, as Max Sabel and Frankie Allinson won 8-4 at No. 2 and Chris Wiechert and Connor Sutton won at No. 3. However, Razumosky and Williams edged Tommy Meyer and Uday Singh 9-8 (7-4 in the tiebreaker) to close within 2-1.
Sutton (pictured) was the only Sagehen to capture a singles win, as he took a 6-3, 6-4 decision at No. 6. Kenyon, though, was able to pull out several close contests to come away witht he team win. Razumosky dropped the first set to Wiechert 6-3, but bounced back with 7-5 and 6-3 wins to capture the 2-1 win at No. 2. Sabel and Williams traded 7-5 victories in the first two sets at No. 3, before Williams took the final set 6-3.
At No. 1 singles, Burgin took a first-set tiebreaker from Meyer 7-6, and then won the second set 6-3, while Tim Rosensteel also won a first-set tiebreaker on his way to a 2-0 win over Allinson at No. 5.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action tomorrow on the second day of the ITA Nationals in the consolation bracket.
