Box Score Thousand Oaks, Calif. - Mayra Virgen scored with 3:11 left in regulation to give the first-place Cal Lutheran Women's Soccer team a 2-1 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday.
The win improves the Regals to 13-2 on the season and a perfect 9-0 in the SCIAC, while the Sagehens slip to 5-6-1 overall and 4-5-1 in league play, remaining one-half game behind Chapman for the all-important fourth spot in the SCIAC (the top four teams earn postseason bids).
Pomona-Pitzer trailed 1-0 at the half, but pulled even in the 54th minute, as sophomore forward Sam Thompson (Huntington Beach, Calif. - pictured) converted in front of the goal after a corner kick from sophomore defender Rachel Keyser (Seattle, Wash.).
The lead held until the closing minutes as Virgen was able to get on the back end of a cross from Kristina Hulse and one-time a shot from 10 yards out that beat Pomona-Pitzer goalie Helena Epps (Santa Cruz, Calif.) to the near side.
Taylor Will gave Cal Lutheran a 1-0 lead in the 20th minute when she volleyed a cross from Virgen from 18 yards out that went over the head of Epps and dipped into the net.
Pomona-Pitzer will be back in action on Wednesday when it travels to Whittier for a 7 p.m. contest.
