CLAREMONT, CA - Facing 15th ranked Bowdoin in the second match of the day, the Pomona-Pitzer men's tennis team hit their stride, walking away with a 6-3 win.
A strong start in doubles enabled PP to jump out to a 3-0 lead heading into singles. The number one team of Tommy Meyer and Frankie Allinson moved to 7-2 on the season with an 8-3 win. The third team of Alex Groth and Chris Wiechert improved to 8-1 on the spring with their 8-6 win. The sweep was clinched when Uday Singh and Max Sabel won 8-6 at two doubles. Singh, battling illness, improved to 8-1 in doubles with Sabel.
Bowdoin came on strong in doubles, taking the first set at number one, three, five, and six singles. But the Hens hung tough and Allinson rebounded after losing the first set to capture the second, 6-2. Sabel put in a dominant performance at four singles, winning 6-1, 6-4. After losing at one, five, and six singles, Bowdoin looked primed for a comeback, storming back to take the second set in a tiebreaker at two singles. But Allinson took quick control of the third set at three singles and clinched the match, winning 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. The number two singles match was decided in a ten-point tiebreaker, and Wiechert stepped up, winning 6-2, 6-7 (3), 10-7 to put the final score at 6-3 in favor of Pomona-Pitzer.
