CLAREMONT, CA - No. 20 men's tennis rode a doubles sweep to an eventual 8-1 home win over no. 27 Mary Washington on Monday.
Facing their second straight nationally ranked opponent, Pomona-Pitzer continued their strong doubles play, jumping out to a 3-0 lead heading into the singles portion of the competition. Uday Singh and Max Sabel recorded the first point for the Hens, an 8-2 win at number two doubles. Shortly afterward, Tommy Meyer and Frankie Allinson captured the Hens second match at number one doubles, 8-4 and Alex Groth and Chris Wiechert secured the sweep with an 8-6 win at three doubles. This is the third consecutive doubles sweep for Pomona-Pitzer, as they have started 2011 undefeated in doubles play.
Maintaining the momentum, Wiechert was the first to record a singles point, dispatching the Eagles Alex Blakhin 6-0, 6-1 at three singles. Sabel was the next to finish, clinching the win with his 6-2, 6-1 win at five singles. Nick Tagliarino continued his strong play with a 6-4, 6-4 win at six singles. The remaining three singles matches went to third sets, with the Hens capturing two of the matches. Meyer rebounded after losing the second set for a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 win over Sam Wichlin. Allinson captured a 5-7, 6-3, 6-3 win at four singles to give Pomona-Pitzer their eighth and final point.
