The No. 20 ranked Sagehens continued their strong start to 2011 with an 8-1 win over No. 30 Brandeis on Wednesday night.
The Sagehens got things rolling early, cruising to wins at number one and three doubles. Junior Tommy Meyer and sophomore Frankie Allinson continued their strong play, taking down the No. 17 ranked doubles team in the country by a score of 8-3. At three doubles, junior Alex Groth and freshman Chris Wiechert jumped out to an early lead and never looked back en route to an 8-1 win. At two doubles, junior Uday Singh and sophomore Max Sabel took advantage of a late break to capture a 9-7 win to secure the doubles sweep and a 3-0 lead heading into singles.
In singles, Meyer was the first Hen to secure a singles point with his 6-3, 6-2 win at one singles. Wiechert was the next player to finish, wrapping up a 6-4, 6-4 win at three singles and clinching the match for Pomona-Pitzer. At six singles, senior Nick Tagliarino captured the 6th point of the evening, winning 6-2, 6-2 and Sabel soon followed at five singles by the same score. Never one to shy away from a dramatic finish, Singh was the last one to finish at two singles, coming back from losing the first set to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3.
On Saturday, Pomona-Pitzer travels to Thousand Oaks to take on No. 7 Cal Lutheran at 10 am.
