Claremont, Calif. - Sophomore Alex Lincoln (Palo Alto, Calif. - pictured) won two events and was just one-hundredth of a second from winning a third as the Pomona-Pitzer Women's Swimming team fell to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps in a SCIAC meet on Saturday.
The loss drops the Sagehens to 1-1 in SCIAC play, after it opened the conference season with a win over Whittier on Friday. CMS captured the team competition by a final score of 220-73.
Lincoln won the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:56.45, defeating teammate Vicky Gyorffy (Sacramento, Calif.), who came in second with a time of 2:00.46. Lincoln addded a win in the 100-yard freestyle, clocking a time of 53:40.
Lincoln also nearly captured the 50-yard freestyle to make it three-for-three in individual events, but fell just .01 short of first place, as Helen Liu touched the wall in a time of 24.85 to edge out Lincoln at 24.86.
Freshman Gailyn Portelance (Seattle, Wash.) also had a strong race in the 400-yard individual medley, as she stayed neck-and-neck for the lead throughout the entire race before finishing a body length behind on the final leg of the freestyle. She ended with a time of 4:51.18, just behind Olivia Graham of CMS, who had a time of 4:49.58
The Sagehens will be back in action next weekend when they compete in the Finis Collegiate Invitational in South Gate, California, before a long break for exams and the Holidays.
