Former Pomona-Pitzer women’s basketball player and coach, Raquel Viramontes, rejoined head coach Alaina Woo on the bench prior to the 22-23 season.

Viramontes served on staff from 2015-2020, assisting the Sagehens to their first two consecutive SCIAC playoff appearances in program history, including a SCIAC championship in 2019. Prior to joining the staff at Pomona-Pitzer, Viramontes spent six years as the head girls basketball coach at Baldwin Park High School. She helped turn the program around from a 29-80 record from 2004-2008 before she started, to top three finishes in the league and qualifying for CIF in every season from 2011-2015.

One of the top long-range shooters in Pomona-Pitzer history, Viramontes still ranks tied for third on the single-season three-point list with 52 in 2005-06. Her 90 three-pointers ranks seventh on the career list, despite only playing two seasons after transferring from Rio Hondo College.
Viramontes graduated from Pomona College in 2008 with a degree in biology and went on to earn her master's in education from Claremont Graduate University in 2009, while earning her biology/science credential. She was named one of LA County’s top 16 Teachers of the Year in the Fall of 2017, and spent this past year teaching science at Mountain View High School in Northern California.

“I am so excited to welcome Raquel back to our program,” said head coach Alaina Woo. “Raquel is an amazing worker, educator and basketball mind. Most importantly, she is a lifelong Sagehen. Welcome home, Raquel.”
