Michael Surina enters his seventh season with the Pomona-Pitzer baseball program and his fifth as the recruiting coordinator. He serves as the first base coach and works extensively with the Sagehens’ hitters, catchers and plays a key role in in-game strategy and planning.
During his tenure, Pomona-Pitzer has compiled a 132-69 record, made three NCAA Regional appearances, won a Super Regional championship, and earned a trip to the College World Series. He has helped develop several standout players, including All-Americans Isaak Kim (Class of 2024) and JC Ng (Class of 2025).
Before joining Pomona-Pitzer, Surina held assistant coaching roles at Ontario Christian High School, Ayala High School, and served as head coach at Chino High School for four seasons, culminating in a playoff appearance in 2019.
Surina also coached in the Cape Cod Baseball League for the Chatham Anglers. He coached future Major Leaguers JD Davis and Connor Joe, along with several other drafted players including Jimmy Pickens, Dante Flores, and Erich Weiss. The Anglers finished that season as regular season division champions and were awarded the President’s Cup for the league’s best overall record.
Surina played independent professional baseball, spending the 2010 season with the Tijuana Cimarrones and Yuma Scorpions of the Golden Baseball League, followed by a stint with the Fort Worth Cats of the American Association in 2011.
Surina began his collegiate playing career at Chaffey College before transferring to the University of La Verne where he earned All-Region honors and was a two-time First Team All-SCIAC selection.
