CLAREMONT, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team fell to CMS 14-10 in the SICAC Championship game Saturday.
The Sagehens were led by Brienz Lang, who scored four goals throughout the match. Mia Amberger and Ayva Magna also had a multigoal game and each scored two goals, and Katie Hugar and Layla Szymczak each netted one goal.
Pomona-Pitzer established their presence early and earned four goals in the first half, three in the first quarter and one in the second. Amberger started the scoring and netted a goal with 6:01 left in the first quarter. Magna then brought the Sagehens ahead 2-0 and scored a goal at the 4:32 mark. CMS soon broke past the Sagehen defenses and found a goal, but Szymczak responded and earned one during a powerplay with 2:56 left on the clock. However, the Athenas continued pressuring Pomona-Pitzer and tied the score 3-3 as the first quarter closed out.
CMS struck first in the second quarter, but Amberger scored another goal with 5:13 left in the period. Still, the Athenas continued pressuring the Sagehens and stole the lead. Pomona-Pitzer entered halftime behind 6-4.
The Sagehens continued playing strong through the second half and earned six more goals in the third and fourth quarters. The Athenas struck first in the third quarter and found two more goals, but Lang attempted to help Pomona-Pitzer catch up and netted a goal during a power play with 3:34 left in the quarter. After CMS found another goal, Lang added another one to the scoring and picked up a penalty goal at the 1:23 mark, and Magna found a last-second goal at the 0:01 mark. The Sagehens entered the fourth quarter of the match trailing the Athenas 9-7.
CMS struck first in the final quarter and earned two more goals. However, Lang soon replied with two back-to-back goals, one at the 3:36 mark, and one during a powerplay with 3:00 mark. The Athenas persisted and found three more goals. Still, Hugar earned a goal during a powerplay with 0:32 left on the clock. The Sagehens eventually fell to CMS 14-10 in the SCIAC Championship match.
