Softball Drops The First Game Of The Series To Whittier

WHITTIER, CA. – The Sagehens fell short to Whittier with final score of a 4-12.

Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens record is now to 12–17 overall and 5–5 in SCIAC play.

The Sagehens generated four runs on seven hits. Sadie Huryn drove in two runs with a double, while Natalie Murguia added an RBI double of her own. Claire Sefkow provided the biggest swing with a solo home run, and Ava Bautista sparked the offense with a perfect 2-for-2 day, including a triple and two runs scored. Audrey Reimers got the start, allowing three runs over 3.1 innings, while Nyla Springer took the loss after surrendering seven runs in relief. Mia Lopez finished the game in the circle.

The Sagehens struck first in the opening inning, as Murguia delivered an RBI double to give the Sagehens an early 1–0 lead. Whittier quickly answered in the bottom half, using back-to-back RBI hits to take a 2–1 advantage. Pomona-Pitzer evened the score in the third inning when  Huryn drove in a run with an RBI double, and the Sagehens pulled even again in the fourth behind a solo home run from Claire Sefkow, making it 3–3. In the fifth, Bautista sparked the offense with a triple before Huryn brought her home with an RBI groundout to give Pomona-Pitzer a 4–3 lead. Whittier responded in a big way in the bottom of the fifth, capitalizing on an error and stringing together timely hits to erupt for seven runs, highlighted by a grand slam that broke the game open and gave the Poets a commanding lead. From there, Whittier added two more runs in the sixth to extend the margin, while the Sagehens were unable to answer late, falling 4–12.

Up Next: The Sagehens will take on Whittier again for a double-header at home. The games will be on Saturday April 11 at 12:00 PM and 2:00 PM.
