CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens men's tennis team edged Haverford in a 4-3 victory Monday afternoon at home.
Season Impact: The win puts the Sagehens at 5-4 on the season and 1-0 in conference play.
Pomona-Pitzer opened the match by sweeping all three doubles courts to secure the doubles point. Drew Goldman and Jay Mallampati earned a commanding 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles, while Leo Rocca and Kiran Vairavanathan followed with a 6-4 victory at No. 2. Sam English and Neil Chulani completed the sweep with a tight 7-5 win at No. 3.
In singles play, the Sagehens picked up three key victories to clinch the match. Goldman led the way at the top spot with a strong 6-4, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Tanner Ige added another point at No. 5 with a 7-5, 6-1 decision, and Ethan Zou secured the decisive point with a 6-0, 6-3 victory at No. 6. Haverford earned wins at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 4 singles, but Pomona-Pitzer's doubles sweep proved to be the difference as the Sagehens held on for the 4-3 team victory.
