CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's tennis team fell 5-2 to No. 10 Middlebury on Wednesday evening at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: The loss puts the Sagehens at 8-8 on the season and 3-0 in conference play.
Middlebury claimed the doubles point, taking two of the three matches. Drew Goldman and Jay Mallampati earned a strong 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles for the Sagehens, but the Middlebury responded with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 to secure the early 1-0 advantage.
In singles play, the Sagehens battled across the lineup but came up just short in several tightly contested matches. Leo Rocca put Pomona-Pitzer on the board with a 6-3, 6-3 victory at No. 2 singles, while Tanner Ige added another point with a hard-fought three-set win at No. 4, rallying for a 6-2, 5-7, 7-6 (7-4) victory. Middlebury secured wins at No. 1, No. 3, No. 5, and No. 6 singles, including a pair of three-set battles at the No. 3 and No. 6 positions to clinch the match. Despite strong performances from Rocca and Ige, the Sagehens fell 2-5.
Up Next: The Sagehens will take on Colby College and Williams College on Friday, March 27th at home. The first match will be at 10:00 a.m. and the second match will be at 5:00 p.m.
