Women's Water Polo Falls to SDSU, Indiana in San Diego

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 SAN DIEGO, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team two losses and fell to SDSU 13-17 and fell to Indiana 5-16 on its final day of the Aztec Invitational Tournament on Sunday.
 
Season Impact: With the loss and the win, the Sagehens continue their season 11-14 overall and 5-0 in SCIAC play.
 
Pomona-Pitzer 13, San Diego State 17

The Sagehens were led by Celia Young, who netted four goals and earned a four-goal haul throughout the match. Katie Hugar and Sydney Bowns also scored three each and Brienz Lang earned two goals. Additionally, Natalie Sullivan Wu also contributed to the scoring and secured one goal.
 
Pomona-Pitzer faced a lot of pressure from San Diego in the first half but persisted in earning six goals throughout the half. The Aztecs dominated the first period and found an early lead. While the Sagehens attempted to catch up, their efforts were stopped by the opposing defenses. Despite their strong efforts, Pomona-Pitzer closed the first quarter behind 0-6. San Diego continued breaking through the Sagehen defenses as the second period started. Still, the Sagehens got on the scoreboard when Bowns fired a shot to the back of the net to earn the first goal for Pomona-Pitzer with 6:40 left on the clock. After Aztecs earned another goal, Young added to the Sagehen scoring by earning a goal with 4:38 left on the clock. More shots from Lang and Young with 2:39 and 2:06 left on the clock furthered the Pomona-Pitzer efforts to catch up. Hugar then scored a penalty goal for the Sagehens with 1:34 on the clock to bring the Sagehens trailing behind 1:34. While San Diego continued breaking through the Pomona-Pitzer defenses, Lang still netted a last-minute goal from a power play with 0:08 left in the quarter. The Sagehens put up a good fight at the end of the half and were just behind the Aztecs 6-9 as the second period concluded.
 
Bowns started the scoring in the second half and earned a goal with 7:26 left on the clock. Bowns then narrowed the score by scoring another goal on a power play with 5:40 left in the third quarter. San Diego attempted to widen their lead and broke through the Sagehen defenses to score. However, Sullivan Wu netted a goal with 2:29 left on the clock to bring Pomona-Pitzer just behind the Aztecs 9-11. Still, San Diego managed to break past the Sagehen defensive lines and maintained their lead. Despite effective offensive maneuvers, Pomona-Pitzer was unable to claim the lead and entered the final period 9-12.
 
Pomona-Pitzer pushed through the fourth quarter and played well to the end of the match. Hugar started the scoring and dented the twine to score with 4:51 left on the clock. While the Aztecs also managed to score, Hugar followed by netting another goal with 3:07 left in the period. Amidst the San Diego siege, Young earned two goals with 1:21 and 0:13 left on the clock. Still, the pressure from the Aztecs proved to be formidable, and the Sagehens fell to SDSU 13-17.
 
Pomona-Pitzer 5, Indiana 16

The Sagehens were led by Ayva Magna, Katie Hugar, Sydney Bowns, Celia Young, and Kailoa Kerber who each netted one.
 
Pomona-Pitzer put up a strong effort in the first half and earned two goals in the first half. Magna started the scoring for the match by securing an early goal with 7:43 left on the clock. However, Indiana pressured the Sagehen defenses and gained three goals to take the lead. While Pomona-Pitzer found various opportunities to score, they were stopped by the opposing defenses. The Sagehens finished the first period down 1-3. Hugar started the scoring in the second period by netting a goal on a player advantage with 6:59 left in the period. However, the Hoosiers found four more goals and prevented Pomona-Pitzer from catching up by blocking their offensive attempts. As Indiana further cemented their lead, Pomona-Pitzer remained behind 2-7 as the match entered halftime.
 
Indiana struck first in the second half and secured two early goals. Bowns replied by scoring a goal with 6:27 left in the period. The Hoosiers continued pressuring the Sagehens and found more goals throughout the quarter. Still, Young attempted to catch up Pomona-Pitzer by earning a goal with 4:14 left on the clock. The pressure from Indiana persisted, and the Sagehens entered the fourth quarter behind 4-14.
 
The Hoosiers continued their offensive attacks into the final period and earned two more goals. Despite having opportunities to score, Pomona-Pitzer remained unable to convert. Kerber was able to earn a last-minute goal with 0:02 left on the clock, but the Indiana lead stood. The Sagehens fell to the Hoosiers 5-16 as they suffered their second loss on the final day of the Aztec invitational, making their record 1-3 for the weekend.
