Women's Water Polo Falls to Princeton, Defeats Caltech


CLAREMONT, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team suffered a 12-1 loss to Princeton in Claremont and secured a 22-6 victory at Caltech in Pasadena Wednesday.
 
Season Impact: With the results, the Sagehens continue their season 10-11 overall and 5-0 in SCIAC play.
 
Pomona-Pitzer 1, Princeton 12

Pomona-Pitzer struggled to gain an edge in the first half of the match. The Tigers were relentless and earned several goals throughout the first period. Amidst the siege, Princeton also limited the Sagehen opportunities to score. Pomona-Pitzer concluded the first period behind 0-5. The Sagehens created several opportunities to score in the second period but were unable to convert. The Tigers managed to widen their lead, and Pomona-Pitzer entered halftime 0-6.
 
Princeton furthered their lead by breaking through the Sagehen defenses as the second half started. However, Pomona-Pitzer managed to earn a goal when Bella McGowan netted one on a power play with 2:06 left on the clock. Still, the Sagehens entered the final quarter behind the Tigers 1-10.
 
Pomona-Pitzer persisted through the fourth quarter. The Sagehens earned a variety of opportunities to score but failed to hit their mark and were unable to convert. The Tigers managed to earn two more goals to bolster their heading, and Pomona-Pitzer fell 1-12 to Princeton.
 
Pomona-Pitzer 22, Caltech 6

The Sagehens were led by Kailoa Kerber who earned an impressive five goals and Ava Gurney who netted four in the win. Natalie Sullivan Wu, Rasma Rotsart, and Celia Young each earned a hat trick. Also contributing to the win, Isabelle Nicole scored two, and Sophia Berger and Lauren Valentin each netted one.
 
Pomona-Pitzer put up a strong effort in the first half and earned twelve goals in the first and second quarters. Gurney started the scoring for the match by netting two back-to-back goals with 7:39 and 6:19 left on the clock. Young followed suit and earned a goal with 5:49 left on the clock. Gurney then managed to secure her third goal of the period with 5:08 left on the clock to bring the Sagehens leading 4-0. Sullivan Wu and Kerber then netted goals, one on a power play with 4:29 and the other with even strength and 2:29 left on the clock, respectively. While Caltech broke through the Sagehen defenses and earned a goal, Pomona-Pitzer's lead remained. The Sagehens finished their first period ahead of the Beavers 6-1.

Caltech struck first in the second period, but Kerber swiftly responded by scoring a goal with 7:30 left on the clock. Sullivan Wu and Berger followed by netting goals with 6:09 and 4:28 left on the clock, respectively. Rotsart and Kerber furthered the Pomona-Pitzer lead by scoring goals with 3:12 and 1:52 left on the clock. Rotsart then earned another, last-minute goal with 0:34 left on the clock. The Sagehens bolstered their heading and entered halftime 12-3.
 
Kerber started the scoring in the second half by netting a goal with 7:12 left on the clock. Gurney then secured a goal with 5:49 left on the clock to buttress the Pomona-Pitzer lead. While the Beavers continued breaking through the Pomona-Pitzer defenses to catch up, Young and Nicole earned goals with 4:53 and 4:07 left on the clock, respectively. Valentin and Nicole followed by netting a goal on a powerplay with 2:39 and one with equal strength with 2:00 left on the clock. The Sagehens maintained their lead and entered the final period ahead of Caltech 18-4.
 
Sullivan Wu started the scoring in the fourth quarter and netted a goal with 6:50 left on the clock. Both teams traded scoring and while the Beavers attempted to find their lead, a goal from Young with 4:35 and one during a power play from Kerber with 2:57 left on the clock kept Pomona-Pitzer ahead. Rotsart also furthered the lead by earning a goal with 1:27 left on the clock. The Sagehens finished with a 22-6 victory over Caltech.
