CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens women's tennis team dropped to UC San Diego 0-5 in their sesason opener Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: The loss puts the Sagehens at a record of 0-1 overall.
The Sagehens found themselves down 1-0 early after UC San Diego claimed the doubles point. UCSD secured wins at No. 1 and No. 3 doubles, as Olivia Allegre and Julia Visaya defeated Lauren Rha and Leticia Bazua Vazquez 6-2, while Hana Gamracy and Kamya Nair earned a 6-2 win over Annique Varty and Mireille Chedid-Daley. The No. 2 doubles match featuring Sofia Kalyva and Tessa Ellingson was left unfinished.
In singles play, the Sagehens battled across the lineup but UC San Diego clinched the match with straight-set victories on multiple courts. Rha fought on Court 1, falling 6-4, 7-5 to Allegre, while Bazua Vazquez dropped a straight-set match on Court 2. Chedid-Daley and Meha Chaudhary also competed in straight-set losses at the No. 3 and No. 4 positions. The remaining singles matches on Courts 5 and 6 were left unfinished, with Ishya Bhavsar and Kalyva each battling deep into their matches before play was halted once the match was decided.
Up Next: The Sagehens will return to action at the Pauley Tennis Complex as they continue their non-conference schedule against Brandeis University on February 15th. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM.
