CLAREMONT, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer women's water polo team edged CMS 12-11 at Haldeman Pool Wednesday night.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens continue their season at 4-8 overall and 2-0 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Mia Amberger and
Sydney Bowns, who each earned a hat trick by scoring three goals throughout the game.
Katie Hugar,
Layla Szymczak, and
Paityn Richardson also had a multi-goal game and each netted two.
Isabella Dova notched seven saves in goal.
Pomona-Pitzer started strong against CMS with seven goals in the first half, scoring three in the first and four in the second period. The Sagehens started the scoring for this match when Richardson found the back of the net with 5:56 left on the clock. The Athenas began a coordinated series of attacks that gave them the lead. Still, Pomona-Pitzer stayed in the game with two key goals from Amberger, one on a power play with 3:25 and one penalty goal with 0:58 left on the clock. swiftly followed suit and secured a penalty goal with 6:15 left on the clock. The Sagehens finished the first period trailing behind CMS 3-4.
Pomona-Pitzer found their footing in the second period. Richardson and Szymczak secured penalty goals with 7:31 and 6:02 left on the clock, respectively to tie the score 5-5. Each side traded scoring, furthering the tie. Notably, Bowns secured goals with 5:26 and 0:30 left on the clock. The Sagehens entered halftime in a competitive 7-7 stalemate with CMS.
The Sagehens kept their momentum as they second half and secured five more goals in the third and fourth quarters. The Athenas struck first in the half, but Hugar swiftly responded by picking up a goal with 3:46 left on the clock. Bowns followed by netting a penalty goal with 2:19 left on the clock. Pomona-Pitzer entered the final quarter behind CMS 9-10.
Amberger started the scoring in the final period and earned a goal on a power play with 6:22 left on the clock. Hugar and Szymczak followed suit and scored a goal and one during a power play with 4:07 and 2:55 left on the clock, respectively, to place the Sagehens ahead 12-10. Despite the Athena efforts to reclaim the lead, the Pomona-Pitzer lead stood. The Sagehens won the competitive match 12-11.
