Women's Water Polo Falls to SJSU, Pacific at Bronco Invitational

SANTA CLARA, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo Team suffered two losses on their final day of the Bronco Invitational tournament as they fell 13-9 to San Jose State and 10-14 to Pacific on Sunday.

Season Impact: With the two losses, the Sagehens continue their season 3-8 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC play.

Pomona-Pitzer 9, San Jose State 13

The Sagehens were led by Paityn Richardson, who earned a hat trick by scoring three goals throughout the game. Kailoa Kerber and Katie Hugar each also had a multigoal game and netted two, and Ayva Magna and Gabby Lewis each netted one.

Pomona-Pitzer started strong against San Jose with 4 first half goals, scoring two in each period. The Spartans struck first, but Hugar responded with netting a goal with 1:43 left on the clock. Lewis soon followed and secured another goal with 1:10 left on the clock. The Sagehens found an early lead and closed out their first quarter with a 2-1 lead. San Jose started a siege on the Pomona-Pitzer defenses in the second period and the Sagehens lost their lead. However, goals from Richardson and Magna with 6:23 and 2:02 left on the clock, respectively, kept Pomona-Pitzer trailing behind. The Sagehens entered halftime behind San Jose 4-6.

The Sagehens continued playing strong into the second half and secured five more goals in the third and fourth quarters. Richardson started the scoring in the second half by netting a goal with 5:56 left on the clock. Still, the pressure from San Jose proved to be formidable as they continued breaking past the Pomona-Pitzer defenses. In an effort to catch up, Hugar picked up a goal with 2:53 left on the clock. However, the Sagehens were still unable to reclaim their edge. Pomona-Pitzer entered their final quarter down 6-10. The Sagehens continued to fight for a heading through the end of the fourth quarter.

The Spartans furthered their lead, but Richardson replied by netting a penalty goal with 5:20 left on the clock. In the last minutes of this heated match, Kerber obtained twoback-to-back goals, one off a penalty and the other on even strength with 1:58 and 0:28 left on the clock, respectively. Despite the strong efforts on all fronts, Pomona-Pitzer still fell short of their mark and fell 9-13 to San Jose.

Pomona-Pitzer 10, Pacific 14

The Sagehens were led by Mia Amberger, who netted a striking five goals throughout the game. Katie Hugar also had a multigoal game and scored two. Layla Szymczak, Sydney Bowns, and Chloe Mei Espinosa each scored one. Pomona-Pitzer put up a good effort in the first half and earned three goals in the first and second quarters. Pacific struck first and established an early lead in the first quarter. Despite multiple opportunities to score, the Sagehens were unable to convert in the face of the Tigers breaking through their defenses. Pomona-Pitzer finished their first period behind Pacific 0-3. In the second period, the scoring traded off between both sides. Amberger earned the first goal for the Sagehens with 6:57 left on the clock. She then followed with two back-to-back goals with 2:05 and 0:46 left on the clock, bringing the Sagehens behind Pacific 3-6 as the game entered halftime.

Pacific struck first in the second half. However, Espinosa responded by beating the opposing goalkeeper and netted a goal with 6:08 left on the clock. Pomona-Pitzer then attempted to catch up with a series of well-executed plays. Amberger secured two more goals, one with 5:21 left on the clock and one with 3:26 left on the clock. With goals from Hugar and Bowns with 4:19 and 3:05 left on the clock, Pomona-Pitzer tied the score 8-8. Despite the strong efforts throughout the period, Pacific retaliated with their own series of plays that helped them reclaim their lead. The Sagehens entered their final period behind Pacific 8-12.

Pacific continued their siege into the final quarter. Still, Pomona-Pitzer did not back down. Hugar attempted to narrow the score gap by securing a penalty goal with 4:32 left on the clock to bring the Sagehens down 9-14. Pomona-Pitzer further attempted to gain an edge through the last seconds of the game when Szymczak scored a goal with 0:09 left on the clock. Despite the strong effort on all fronts, Pomona-Pitzer fell to Pacific in their final game of the Bronco Invitational Tournament, making their record 1-3 for the weekend.
