CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo opened the 2026 Gary Troyer Tournament with a pair of hard fought losses to No. 16 California Baptist and No. 12 UC San Diego Friday.
Sagehens 5, CBU 10
Pomona-Pitzer scored the game's first three goals, including a pair from
Zach Whitfield and one from
Indigo Lee to take a 3-0 lead through one. But the Lancers responded with eight straight through the next quarter and a half, going up 8-3.
Jake Lee found the back of the net as well as
Michael Soybel, bringing the Sagehens within three at 8-5 heading into the fourth. But CBU held on, adding a pair of scores in the fourth to seal the 10-5 win.
Sagehens 10, UCSD 16
Pomona-Pitzer hung around through the first half, with Soybel opening the scoring two minutes into the contest.
Jake Lee and
Chase Barman added scores in the opening period, as UCSD held a 4-3 lead through one.
Alex Minton put one in midway through the second quarter, before the Tritons scored two to go up 7-4.
Jaden Winters answered with back-to-back goals to bring the Sagehens back within one, 7-6. But UCSD scored the next three to take a 10-6 advantage.
Winters added another goal and Minton scored two more in the final period. But the Tritons added a pair of their own in the final minutes, eventually coming away with the 16-10 win.
Up Next: The Sagehens will host Air Force and Biola tomorrow, Oct. 3, to close out the 2026 Troyer Tournament.
