CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball outlasted Redlands in a five-set thriller (18-25, 30-28, 27-25, 24-26, 15-13) Thursday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: The win gives the Sagehens an 8-13 record, including 2-5 in SCIAC play.
Kayla Thienprasiddhi led all hitters with 21 kills on a .226 clip, adding 17 digs and three blocks.
Charlotte Sekerka posted 11 kills and six blocks while
Samantha Grabb had 10 kills, seven digs and six blocks.
Corrina Benson notched 20 digs while
Sophie Mies had 32 assists and 13 digs.
Redlands took a 1-0 match lead after taking set one, 25-18, despite a late kill from Sekerka. Pomona-Pitzer responded with a marathon second set win, 30-28. The Sagehens overcame four match point opportunities for the Bulldogs. Thienprasiddhi, Grabb, Sekerka and Mies each recorded kills down the stretch. A Redlands attack error finally gave Pomona-Pitzer the second set win.
The Sagehens again overcame a match point opportunity for Redlands in the third set. With the game later tied at 25,
Matsa Shi and Sekerka traded kills to give Pomona-Pitzer set three, 27-25, and a 2-1 match lead. The Bulldogs then overcame a 24-22 deficit in set four, scoring the frame's final four points to force a fifth set.
In the fifth, Redlands opened the game on a 4-0 run before Pomona-Pitzer answered with a 5-0 run of its own, capped by a Thienprasiddhi kill from Mies. Later trailing 10-7, the Sagehens used a 6-1 run to take a 13-11 advantage.
Ella Mesard then posted a kill to bring it to match point, 14-12. Thienprasiddhi eventually sealed the 15-13 set win with another kill, giving Pomona-Pitzer the five-set victory.
