Volleyball Falls to APU, No. 18 Babson

CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's volleyball fell in straight sets to APU (13-25, 14-25, 14-25) and in a five-set thriller to No. 18 Babson (25-15, 25-22, 23-25, 21-25, 19-21) Saturday at Voelkel Gymnasium. 
 
Season Impact: The results put the Sagehens at 7-12 on the season, including 1-4 in SCIAC play. Corrina Benson broke her own single-season service aces program record of 45 in the rally scoring era with a career-high tying seven versus Babson. 
 
Sagehens 0, APU 3
 
Sophia Scholz and Samantha Grabb each tallied a team-high five kills versus the Cougars, while Charlotte Sekerka had four. Lexi Seres posted 14 digs while Alena Yang had 13. Sophia Kim and Maddie Tately each dished out 11 assists. 
 
The Sagehens led 6-5 early in set one after a block from Makayla Sheffer and Alex Besteman. APU went on to take an 18-7 lead, before Pomona-Pitzer scored six straight including a kill from Nicole Rabadi. But APU scored the final seven to take set one, 25-13. Rabadi, Grabb, Scholz and Greta Klinkmann recorded kills down the stretch in set two but the Cougars won the frame, 25-14. 
 
Kills from Sekerka and Tately tied the game 9-9 in set three. Sekerka posted a pair of kills and Klinkmann added one late. But APU came away with the 25-14 set three win to take the match, 3-0. 
 
Sagehens 2, No. 18 Babson 3
 
Kayla Thienprasiddhi notched 13 kills and 11 digs versus the Beavers while Grabb added 12 and three blocks. Benson posted 26 digs to go with her seven aces and Makayla Sheffer had six blocks and five kills. Paige Butler had 25 assists and 12 digs. 
 
Pomona-Pitzer ran away with set one, 25-15. A kill from Sekerka put the team up 15-6 before a Grabb kill and a Babson attack error put the Sagehens up 20-10. Sophie Mies set Sheffer for the final kill. 
 
Trailing 14-12 in set two, a Benson ace capped a 4-0 Sagehen run. Back-to-back aces from Sophia Lee then put Pomona-Pitzer up 21-17. Grabb and Sekerka traded kills to close off the 25-22 set two win. 
 
In set three, Sekerka and Sheffer posted a block to give Pomona-Pitzer a 21-20 advantage. Babson, though, scored the next four to go up 24-21. Ella Mesard and Thienprasiddhi recorded kills, but the Beavers ultimately took set three, 25-23. Babson then took set four, 25-21, despite a late block from Mesard and Besteman and a pair of kills from Mesard. 
 
Neither team could seal set five despite several opportunities each. Babson earned the first match point at 14-13, before a kill from Grabb and a Beaver attack error gave Pomona-Pitzer match point, 15-14. The Sagehens earned match point opportunities again at 16-15 and 17-16 with kills from Grabb and Mesard. A Sekerka kill later tied the set at 19. But Babson scored the next two, taking set five 21-19 and the match, 3-2.
