Sagehens Defeat Whittier 60-44 On The Road

WHITTIER, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer women's basketball won 60-44 against Whittier Wednesday night on the road.

Season Impact: The victory puts the Sagehens at 7-6 on the season, including 2-2 in SCIAC play.

Sara Chicco paced the Sagehens with 15 points on an efficient 6-of-9 shooting night, including 3-of-4 from beyond the arc, while Abigail Homan added 13 points and a team-high eight rebounds. Kayla Malek and Avery Patricco each dished out five assists to help anchor Pomona-Pitzer's offense.

Pomona-Pitzer opened the game with energy as Chicco buried an early three, followed by a midrange jumper at 6:51 and another triple at the five-minute mark to keep the Sagehens within striking distance. Whittier found success in the paint, but Pomona-Pitzer responded with aggressive defense, highlighted by Malek's steals and solid rebounding on both ends of the floor. In the second quarter, the Sagehens continued to apply pressure, taking brief leads behind Homan's interior scoring and forcing multiple Whittier turnovers. Contributions from Sofia Robel and timely defensive plays helped keep momentum alive, and a late Emily Lee layup sent the Sagehens into halftime with a 28–26 advantage.

The Sagehens came out firing in the third, opening the half with an E. Lee three and converting steals from Malek and Jadyn Lee into easy points. Relentless defensive pressure led to repeated Whittier turnovers, allowing the Sagehens to stretch the lead to 49–32 and seize full control. The Sagehens maintained their dominance in the fourth, building the lead to as many as 22 behind strong finishes from Homan and Malek, and closed out a convincing 60–44 victory over Whittier.

Up Next: The Sagehens continue SCIAC play on Wednesday, Jan. 14, at home against Occidental. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. PT.
