CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Football team fell in their home opener to Lewis & Clark 21-3 on Saturday afternoon at Merritt Field.
Season Impact: with the loss, the Sagehens fall to 1-1 overall.
The Sagehens were led by
Grady Russo who went 26-44 with 242 yards. Russo also ran 12 times for 49 yards on the ground.
Joaquin Valdez led the receivers with 56 yards off of five catches while
Jack Sobota had 40 yards and
Brennan Dragomer with 38.
The defensive side of the ball was led by
Gus Burns who totaled 9 tackles along with teammate
Elliott Graziano while Burns,
Max Eastman and
Alden Kling tallied sacks in the game against the Pioneers.
The Sagehens had a big chance to take the lead in the first quarter with a first and goal but were stopped on four downs with an incompletion on the goaline to turn the ball over on the games' first scoring chance for the Sagehens.
The Pioneers broke the 0-0 scoreline early in the second quarter after a nine-yard run to take a 7-0 lead over the Sagehens. Lewis & Clark doubled their lead in the second with 1:16 left before halftime at 14-0, but the Sagehens came back with a quick drive down the field and elected to take the three points rather than go for a touchdown at the end of the first half to head into halftime down 14-3.
Pomona-Pitzer struggled to get its offense going in the second half while the Pioneers added another score early in the fourth after a 54-yard drive to take. 21-3 lead over the Sagehens and handed Pomona-Pitzer their first loss of the 2025 season.
