Men’s Water Polo Hangs Tough with Pepperdine, UC Davis

LA JOLLA, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo opened the 2025 season with a pair of hard-fought battles against Pepperdine and UC Davis at the Triton Invitational, ultimately falling 14-8 to the Waves and 14-7 to the Aggies.
 
Sagehens 8, Pepperdine 14
 
Jaden Winters and Darragh Flanders led the Sagehens with two goals apiece against the Waves. Greg Moore tallied seven saves in goal.
 
Pomona-Pitzer struck first with a Max Distaso goal midway through the opening period. Pepperdine answered before Jake Lee scored a goal of his own to put the Sagehens back up 2-1. The Waves, though, scored five of the next six to go up 6-3.
 
Zach Whitfield, Flanders, Winters and Indigo Lee each scored down the stretch but the Waves came away with the 14-8 win.
 
Sagehens 7, UC Davis 14
 
Seven different Sagehens scored a goal against the Aggies, with Miles Chiang notching an assist and a goal. John Possman tallied five saves through eight minutes in goal.
 
UC Davis opened the game with a pair of goals before Chase Barman netted one of his own. Chaing, Distaso, Indigo Lee and Conrad Hugar scored before the half, as the Sagehens trailed 8-5 at the break. But the Aggies scored five unanswered to start the third and go up 13-5. Possman scored a goal in the fourth as well as Flanders, as UC Davis came away with the 14-7 win.
 
Up Next: The Sagehens will wrap up the Triton Invitational with a pair of matches tomorrow, Sunday, Aug. 31. Pomona-Pitzer will first take on Long Beach State at 9:20 a.m. PT before facing UC Santa Barbara at 1:20 p.m. PT.
