Sagehens Complete Four-Peat As D-III Champs

ROCK ISLAND, IL. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team completed their four-peat of National Championships with their 9-8 win over CMS at the Anna Greve Lund Aquatics Center on Sunday afternoon.

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens end the season at 25-10 overall and four-peated as the SCIAC Regular Season Champions, SCIAC Tournament Champions and D-III National Champions.

The Sagehens were led by Kaylee Stigar who netted a hat-trick in the win. Mia Amberger netted two goals while Ayva Magna, Lisbon Zeigler, Brienz Lang, and Paityn Richardson had one.  Zosia Amberger picked up her fourth win in the D-III National Championship game and was named MVP with 10 saves.

The Athenas controlled the game early and jumped out to a big 3-0 lead in the first before the Sagehens netted their first goal of the game by Magna just before the end of the first quarter to make the deficit down to 3-1 heading into the second.

The Sagehens battled back in the second with goals from Lang and Stigar to make it a one-goal game at 4-3 but still trailed the Athenas by one heading into halftime.

Richrdson came out with a big goal for Pomona-Pitzer to start the second half and then the Sagehens took their first lead of the game at 5-4 after Amberger netted her first of the game.  The Sagehens continued to build their lead with a big third quarter as Stigar and Amberger netted goals to make it 7-4 but CMS ended the third strong with back-to-back goals to make it a one-goal game in favor of the Sagehens at 7-6 entering the fourth.

Pomona-Pitzer did just enough to preserve their lead in the fourth. Stigar gave them a two-goal cushion early in the quarter and then Zeigler had a huge goal after a CMS answer to make it 9-7 with 3:49 to play.   CMS got back within one goal at 9-8 and had a chance to send the game into overtime but Amberger came up big inside the cage and came away with a Championship save to give the Sagehens their fourth consecutive D-III Title.
