Women's Tennis Sweeps ETBU 4-0 In Round of 32 Of NCAA Tournament

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team earned a quick 4-0 win in their first game of the NCAA tournament in the Round of 32 over East Texas Baptist University. 

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens are now 14-7 on the season.

The Sagehens took the doubles point to give them momentum as the teams combated the heat. Amelia Poor and Nyakiriri Kanefu picked up the first win of the day 6-1 at No. 2. Marissa Markey and Angie Zhou finished not long after clinching the team's doubles point with a 6-3 win at No 1. No. 3's Meha Chaudhary and Annique Varty played a tight match and had gotten it back to 3-4 before the match was abandoned.

At No. 6 Annique Varty won with the use of her power hitting 6-0, 6-2 to put the Sagehens up 2-0. Marissa Markey followed up after her with a 6-1, 6-1 win at No. 2 The clinch came from Meha Chaudhary who was battling against her teammate Angie Zhou to get the clinch. Chaudhary won at No. 5 6-3, 6-0, while Zhou's match was abandoned with her up 6-0, 5-0 and 40-30 within the game with match point looming for her opponent. Amelia Poor and Sofia Kalyva's matches were also left unfinished with them both up at 6-0, 5-3 and 6-3, 2-1 respectively.

Up Next: With this win the Sagehens continue to host the Regional at Pauley Tennis Complex and will face Trinity University (TX) in the Sweet 16 on Sunday May 11, at 10:00 a.m. PST with a trip to the NCAA Championships on the line.
