CLAREMONT, Calif. — Pomona-Pitzer baseball fell 9-7 in a tight SCIAC Championship game Sunday afternoon at La Verne.
Five different Sagehens tallied an RBI on offense, including
Cooper Berry,
Greg Pierantoni,
Tanner DeGrazia,
William Kinney and
Jimmy Legg.
Lucas Dennis was credited with the loss from the mound despite going 4.1 innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Much like yesterday's first game of the championship round, the Sagehens jumped out early to a 5-0 lead after a five-run opening frame. Berry, DeGrazia, Pierantoni and Kinney posted RBI while
Xavier Hattenburg scored on a balk. The Leopards, though, responded with six unanswered runs over the next three innings to go up 6-5.
Pomona-Pitzer tied the game back up in the sixth inning after Legg tripled down the right field line to score Hattenburg. Kinney then scored on an error in the eighth to put the Sagehens up 7-6. But La Verne seized control back in the eighth, scoring three in the frame to take a 9-7 lead.
Despite loading the bases with two outs in the top of the ninth, the Sagehens couldn't quite come all the way back, as La Verne held on for the 9-7 victory to win the SCIAC Championship.
Up Next: The Sagehens will wait to see if they will be selected to compete in the NCAA Tournament. The selection show will take place tomorrow, Monday, May 12. NCAA Regionals are May 16-18.
