Waddell Walks It Off For The Sagehens

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer softball team defeated Cal Lutheran University 3-2 at home on a Devin Waddell walk-off home run!

Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens are 18-11 overall and 7-6 in SCIAC conference play.

Violet Burnham, Sophia Roberts, and Devin Waddell led the Sagehen's offense. Burnham was the only Sagehen to have a multi-hit game going  2-for-3 and scoring one run. Roberts was 1-for-3 with two RBIs to even out the score at 2-2 in the bottom of the sixth, and last but not least, Waddell hit the game-winning solo HR in the bottom of the seventh.

Both teams showcased strong pitching and defense early, with the first four innings scoreless despite several base runners.The Sagehens threatened in the first and second inning but stranded two each time. The breakthrough came in the top of the fifth, when Cal Lutheran reached on an error and later scored on an RBI single to give CLU a 1–0 lead. The Sagehens responded in the bottom of the sixth. With two outs, Sophia Roberts came through with a clutch two run RBI single to left, scoring Burnham and Morgan Groves and flipping the lead in favor of the Sagehens, 2–1. Despite that, the Regals refused to give up. In the top of the seventh, they were able to tie the game up making the score  2–2. With the game tied heading into the bottom of the seventh,  Waddell led off and crushed a solo home run, way over the left center fence, sealing the walk-off win for the Sagehens.

Not only did Waddell win the game for the Sagehens with her bat, she picked up the victory in the circle after pitching all seven innings.

Up Next:  The Sagehens will finish out the series with a double header on the road at Cal Lutheran. The first pitch is scheduled at 12:00 p.m. PT.
