GEORGETOWN, TX – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team had a double-header against the Southwestern University and Concordia University Texas. The Sagehens defeated Southwestern 4-3 and defeated Concordia University Texas 5-2 on Friday.
Season Impact: With the sweep, the Sagehens are now 14-8 overall and 5-2 in SCIAC conference play.
Match 1:
The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team earned a 4-3 road win over Southwestern on Friday morning in Georgetown, Texas, riding a dominant doubles performance and clutch singles play to seal the victory. The Sagehens started strong, sweeping all three doubles matches to take the early 1-0 lead. At No. 1 doubles, Drew Goldman and Jay Mallampati posted a 6-3 win, while Luke Feng and Sam English followed with a 6-2 victory at No. 2. Ethan Lee and Neil Chulani secured the sweep with a 6-4 win on court three. In singles, the Sagehens picked up three more wins to close out the match. Ethan Lee at No. 1 singles battled back for a 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 win. Sam English also went the distance at No. 4, earning a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win. John Wehrle added a straight-set win at No. 6, 7-6, 6-3.
Despite tight matches, Southwestern earned points at No. 2, No. 3, and No. 5 singles. But the Sagehens' fast start in doubles and steady singles play proved enough to edge out the Pirates in a competitive match on the road.
Match 2:
After splitting the first two doubles courts, the Sagehens secured the early lead with a clutch win at No. 3 and followed up with four singles victories to clinch the match. Sam English and Luke Feng got the Sagehens on the board early with a dominant 6-1 win at No. 1 doubles. Although Jay Mallampati and Blake Bothmer dropped their match at No. 2, Leo Rocca and Charlie Coleman delivered a 6-3 win on court three to give the Sagehens the doubles point. In singles play, the Sagehens powered through with wins across courts three through six. Jay Mallampati was solid at No. 3 singles, rolling to a 6-3, 6-0 win. John Wehrle picked up a win by retirement at No. 4 after taking the first set 6-3 and going up 2-0 in the second. Blake Bothmer secured a 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 5, and Lucas Elkins closed things out with a 6-3, 6-4 win at No. 6. Concordia earned wins at the top two singles spots, but the Sagehens closed out their first day in Texas with a big team victory.
