CLAREMONT, CA – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis defeated Williams College with a score of 4-3 and Occidental with a score of 6-1 in a double header on Saturday at home.
Season Impact: With the pair of victories, the Sagehens are 11-6 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC play.
Match 1:
The Pomona-Pitzer men's tennis team secured a hard-fought 4-3 victory over Williams on Saturday, clinching the doubles point and splitting singles play to take the match.
The Sagehens started strong by sweeping all three doubles matches. Drew Goldman and Jay Mallampati set the tone at No. 1 with a 6-4 win. Luke Feng and Sam English followed with a 6-3 victory at No. 2, while Ethan Lee and Neil Chulani completed the sweep with a 6-4 win at No. 3.
In singles, the Sagehen's early lead proved crucial, as Williams mounted a comeback by winning three of the six singles matches. At No. 1, Goldman battled in a marathon match but lost in the third set, giving Williams the point. Ethan Lee fell in a tough three-set match at No. 2 (6-4, 2-6, 2-6), while Andrew Andea came up just short in another close contest, dropping his match at No. 3 6-7(6), 6-4.
The Sagehens responded with key wins in the lower lineup. Luke Feng dominated at No. 4, defeating Liu 6-1, 6-3. English followed up with a hard-fought 7-6(7), 6-2 win at No. 5. The match came down to No. 6 singles, where Neil Chulani outlasted his opponent in a three-setter, 6-2, 2-6, 7-6(7), securing the win for the Sagehens.
Match 2:
The Pomona-Pitzer men's tennis team secured a dominant 6-1 victory over Occidental. The Sagehens controlled the match from the start, sweeping the doubles competition and winning five of six singles matches.
In doubles play, the Sagehens set the tone with three commanding wins. Luke Feng and Sam English took the No. 1 spot with a 6-3 win, while Neil Chulani and Jay Mallampati earned a 6-2 victory at No. 2. At No. 3, Kiran Vairavananthan and Blake Bothmer sealed the doubles sweep with a 6-1 win.
The Sagehens carried their momentum into singles, where they secured five straight-set victories. Feng dominated at No. 1, winning 6-0, 6-2. English followed with a 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 2. Mallampati took care of business at No. 4, 6-2, 6-3, while Vairavananthan closed out No. 6 singles with a commanding 6-4, 6-0 victory.
The match of the day came at No. 5, where Bothmer outlasted his opponent in a three-set battle, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6. Occidental secured its lone point at No. 3, defeating John Wehrle 6-1, 6-1.
