Sagehens Fall to SJSU, Pacific at Fraser Memorial

SAN JOSE, CALIF. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's water polo team fell 14-9 to San Jose State and 18-12 to the University of the Pacific Saturday on their first day of the Julian Fraser Memorial.
Season Impact: With the results, the Sagehens continue their season at 12-11 overall and 7-0 in SCIAC play.

Pomona-Pitzer 9, San Jose State 14

The Sagehens were led by Darragh Flanders and Jaden Winters who each netted two goals in the game versus the Spartans. Chase Barman, Conrad Hugar, Zach Whitfield, Miles Chiang and Logan Colman each netted one goal.

Pomona-Pitzer started off strong against the Spartans with four first half goals including three goals in the first and one in the second quarter. San Jose State struck first and found an early lead, but Winters responded with two goals with 3:10 and 1:22 left on the clock. Despite San Jose State continuing to break through the Sagehen defense, Hugar managed to net a goal with 0:02 left on the clock. Pomona-Pitzer ended the first quarter trailing the Spartans 3-4. San Jose State secured more goals at the start of the second quarter, but Hugar and Barman each netted a goal for Pomona-Pitzer to maintain the momentum. However, the Sagehens still entered halftime behind the Spartans, 4-6.

Pomona-Pitzer continued to play well in the second half as the team secured five more goals in the third and fourth quarters. Colman and Whitfield each netted a goal with 6:19 and 2:42 left on the clock. Still, the Spartan offenses proved to be overwhelming as Pomona-Pitzer fell behind 6-12 as the third period concluded.

Pomona-Pitzer continued its effort in the fourth quarter by scoring three more goals from Flanders and Chiang. Notably, Flanders netted back-to-back goals with 4:19 and 3:24 left on the clock. The Sagehens brought a competitive effort throughout the game but still fell to San Jose 9-14.

Pomona-Pitzer 12, University of the Pacific 18

The Sagehens were led versus Pacific by Darragh Flanders, who secured a four-goal haul. Zach Whitfield netted three goals, and Indigo Lee and Max Distaso each scored two, while Conrad Hugar netted one.

Pomona-Pitzer started well with eight first half goals. Pacific struck first and found an early lead, but Flanders attempted to catch the Sagehens up goal during a powerplay with 3:30 left on the clock. However, the Tigers kept breaking through the Pomona-Pitzer defenses. The Sagehens concluded the first quarter behind Pacific 1-7. Whitfield started the scoring in the second quarter with 7:37 left on the clock. Pomona-Pitzer then found their edge and secured six more goals. Distaso and Lee each netted one with 6:42 and 5:39 left on the clock, respectively. Whitfield and Flanders followed, and each netted two to tie the score. The Sagehens entered halftime tied with Pacific 8-8.

The Sagehens maintained the momentum through the second half and secured 4 goals in the third and fourth quarters. Pacific struck first in the second half, but Hugar managed to break through the opposing defenses and score with 5:09 left on the clock. Despite the pressure from the opposing team, Distaso and Lee managed to net two more goals with 2:21 and 1:27 left on the clock. Pomona-Pitzer concluded the third quarter behind Pacific 11-15.

The Tigers furthered their lead in the fourth period, but Flanders secured another goal for the Sagehens with 6:24 left on the clock. Despite the strong effort, Pomona-Pitzer still fell to Pacific.
