Sagehens Fall To CMS In Double OT Sixth Street Rivalry

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team fell in double overtime to CMS 72-71 on Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
 
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fell to 10-7 overall and 4-4 in SCIAC play.
 
The Sagehens were led by Joe Cookson who went for 26 points, 13 rebounds and six assists in the loss. Samir O'Brien was the only other Sagehen in double digits with 13.
 
A Sixth Street Rivalry for the record books that saw both teams depleted after 50 minutes of actions.  An extremely tight game throughout saw the two teams exchanging leads early and CMS holding a 15-8 lead with 13:11 to play in the first half. CMS got their lead to nine points at 21-12, but the Sagehens responded with an 8-0 run to cut the lead down to one point at 21-20.  A late three pointer by Cookson gave the Sagehens the lead heading into halftime up 30-29.
 
This time is was the Sagehens who held the lead for the majority of the half and took a 10 point lead at 53-43 with 8:24 to play. The Sagehens stretched that lead to as much as 11 points, but CMS chipped away at the lead down the stretch and tied the game at 58-58 with 2:09 to play in regulation. The Sagehens took a two-point lead with a layup from Ty Bergman, but CMS responded with the last shot to tie the game at 60-60 and sent the game into overtime.
 
The lead exchanged hands a few times in the first overtime period as CMS went on to take a 69-67 lead with 20 seconds remaining. The Sagehens extended the game with a layup from Bergman and went into the second overtime tied at 69-69.
 
Only a few made baskets in the second overtime, but the game-winner came off of a few second chance opportunities for CMS and an and-one basket put CMS up 72-71 with just three seconds to play.  Pomona-Pitzer got off a last second shot but it didn't fall as CMS took the first leg of the Sixth Street Rivalry.
