CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team earned their first SCIAC win of the season with a 74-60 win over Chapman on Saturday evening at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: with the win, the Sagehens improved to 7-5 overall and 1-2 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Joe Cookson who had a game-high 23 points in the win.
Ty Bergman notched a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards while
Peyton Mullarkey and
Samir O'Brien each chipped in with nine.
The Sagehens kept a good pace on offense throughout the entire game shooting 42.4% from the floor and 28% from three while Chapman stayed with the Sagehens with 35 points in the first half shooting 50% from the floor but only came away with 25 second half points hitting on just 35.7%.
Pomona-Pitzer got out early with an 8-2 run as Mullarkey, Cookson and Bergman got the Sagehens going right out of the gate. The Sagehens increased their lead to 12 points with a 17-5 lead after a Bergman dunk, but the Panthers battled back to bring it back down to just a one-point game at 21-20 with just under nine minutes remaining in the first half.
The Panthers kept it close for the rest of the first half, but the Sagehens got a little more breathing room just before halftime after a last second layup by O'Brien put the Sagehens up 39-35 heading into the break.
The second half was more of the same from the offense while the defense clamped down on the Panthers making it hard for Chapman to stay with the Sagehens' offense in the second half. Pomona-Pitzer quickly took a comfortable lead with a 54-46 advantage after an
Owen Avdalovic three with 12 minutes remaining.
Chapman never got it back to a one-possession game after that as the Sagehens closed out the game down the stretch going up by as much as 14 to take their first conference win of the season.
