CLAREMONT, CA. – Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis had a sweep of the ITA West Regional Championships as
Angie Zhou was crowned as the ITA West Regional Singles Champion and the team of Zhou and
Marissa Markey were crowned as the Doubles Champions this past weekend at the ITA West Regional Tournament.
Zhou and Markey earn All-American honors for their displays with weekend while Zhou will now already be a two-time All-American selection for 2024-25. Zhou and Markey started the day as teammates with a big win over the CMS doubles team of Alisha Chulani and Ella Brissett by the scores of 7-6, 5-0 to earn the doubles title.
The All-Americans then had to go against one another in the Singles Final with Zhou coming out as the winner by the scores of 6-1, 6-3.
Zhou and Markey's route to their doubles championship went through
Annique Varty and
Nyakiriri Kanefu (8-3), Rebecca Kong and Emily Ing (8-5), Sara Beckman and Natalie Sprenger (8-2) and Valentina Bellagamba and Chloe McBride (8-0).
Before meeting Markey in the finals, Zhou went through Mari Carmen Bufkin (6-4, 6-1), Kiana Brady (6-2, 7-6), Aspen Young (6-0, 6-1) and Natalie Sprenger (6-0, 6-1).
Markey also grinded her way to the singles final after she went through Maegan Deng (7-5, 7-6), Alisha Chulani (4-6, 7-5, 11-7), Bell Zhou (6-1, 6-4), and Carissa Gerung (6-0, 6-0).
Also making her way to and winning the consolation final was first-year Sagehen
Annique Varty. Varty matched up with Natalie Sprenger in the consolation singles final where she won 7-5, 6-3.
For making it to the Championship in the Singles and Doubles, both Zhou and Markey will compete in the ITA Cup starting on Thursday, October 10
th and run through Sunday October 13
th.
