CLAREMONT, CA. – The No. 2 seeded Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team defeated the No. 3 seed Redlands 5-2 on Thursday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens advanced to the SCIAC Tournament Championship and improved to 16-5 overall.
The Sagehens started the day by taking only one of the doubles matches against Redlands.
Marissa Markey and
Angie Zhou won the only doubles match for the Sagehens at the No. 2 position by a score of 8-3. Redlands went on to take No. 3 doubles 8-6 and then
Nina Ye and
Lauren Rha fell at No. 1 doubles in a tiebreaker, 8-7.
After falling behind 2-1 heading into singles, the Sagehens went on to win four straight singles matches to clinch the semifinal. Zhou quickly earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at the No. 1 position while
Amelia Poor followed with a 6-1, 6-2 win at No. 6 singles. The final two wins of the match came at No. 2 and No.3 singles. Rha went on to win her singles match 6-3, 6-0 while
Nyakiriri Kanefu won 6-3, 6-1.
The Sagehens will next play for the SCIAC Tournament Championship at CMS on Saturday, May 4
th at 11:00 a.m.
