MARSHALL, TX. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball team punched its first-ever ticket to the NCAA World Series with their 8-7 win over East Texas Baptist on Saturday afternoon at Woods Field.
The Sagehens took the three-game Super Regional Series 2-0 over the Tigers to improve to 37-12 on the season.
The Sagehens were led by
Isaac Kim who became the first SCIAC player to hit for the cycle in an NCAA Tournament game. Kim went 5-5 with two singles, a home run, a double, and a triple in the win.
JC Ng and
William Kinney both had two hits with Kinney and
Peter Savas hitting their first career home runs as well.
Greg Pierantoni,
Jack Gold,
Jimmy Legg, and
Cooper Berry, had one hit as well.
Hanoh Seo got the start and came away with his 10
th win over the season to tie the program record for wins in a single season with five innings, five runs off six hits, and eight strikeouts.
Wade Lawson came in out of the pen and threw three scoreless frames with one of the most spectacular double plays you'll ever see with
Eric Prough coming in an locking down the save.
The Sagehens played from behind again in game two as ETBU plated two runs in the first inning to take an early 2-0 lead.
Savas came through with a game-tying two-run homer in the second inning to tie the game at 2-2 and each team scored one in the third with an RBI from Pierantoni to make it 3-3 after three innings of play.
The Tigers took the lead back with a run in the fourth before the Sagehens reclaimed the lead in their next at-bats with Kinney's first career blast and an RBI walk by Gold to make it 5-4.
Once again, the Tigers came back to tie the game with a single through the right side to tie the game at 5-5 through five innings of play.
The Sagehens and Kim went to work as he drove in two in the sixth with a single up the middle and came back with a solo home run in the eighth to complete the cycle to give the Sagehens a three-run lead at 8-5 heading into the ninth.
With Prough on for the save, the Tigers made it interesting with two runs to cut the lead down to one at 8-7 with the winning run on. Prough struck out the game's final two batters as the Sagehens rushed the field with their ticket punched to Eastlake, Ohio.
