ST. LOUIS, MO. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team fell to Chicago 5-4 on Tuesday night in the NCAA Semifinals.
The Sagehens fell to the Maroons by one match after a lengthy day that had the start time pushed back two hours, started outside, and finished indoors due to inclement weather.
Pomona-Pitzer started the day by taking all three doubles matches outdoors to take an early lead.
Marissa Markey and
Angie Zhou earned the first point with an 8-4 win at No. 2 doubles while
Lauren Rha and
Nina Ye won No. 1 doubles, 8-6. The Sagehens completed the doubles sweep with
Alex Coleman and
Amelia Poor earning a tight 8-6 win to take all three points heading into singles.
After the Sagehens were up on four of the six courts during the start of singles play outdoors, the match was delayed due to lightning and moved inside to finish singles play. The Sagehens got their fourth point as Markey won the first singles match of the day at No. 4 singles 6-4, 6-1. The Maroons started to come back during the singles matches as Rha fell at No. 2 singles 6-4, 6-1 and Zhou lost at No. 1 singles 7-6 (8-6), 6-3.
Nyakiriri Kanefu dropped her singles match in three sets by the scores of 6-2, 4-6, 3-6, and
Nina Ye lost at No. 6 singles 6-3, 6-1.
With the match tied at 4-4, it came down to No. 5 singles.
Leticia Bazua Vazquez fought hard to force a third set but ultimately fell 6-4, 7-5 as the Maroons went on to the National Championship.
