AMHERST, MA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Tennis team advanced through the opening pod of the NCAA Tournament with their 5-1 win over Amherst on Sunday morning at the Amherst Tennis Courts.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 19-5 overall.
The Sagehens started out with two of the three doubles matches ending in their favor with wins at No. 2 and No. 3 doubles.
Marissa Markey and
Angie Zhou came away with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles while
Amelia Poor and
Alex Coleman took an 8-4 victory to put the Sagehens up 2-1 heading into singles play.
Pomona-Pitzer carried its momentum into singles action and went up on every first set over Amherst.
Nyakiriri Kanefu got the first win of singles play for the Sagehens with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at the No. 2 position while Zhou followed shortly after with a 6-2, 6-1 win at the No. 1 singles spot to put the Sagehens one point away from the clinch.
The Sagehens went on to get the clinch at the No. 4 spot as Markey won in straight sets with a 6-2, 6-2 win to push the Sagehens through to the next round of the NCAA Tournament.
Up Next: The Sagehens will now travel to WASHU for their Elite 8 match next weekend.
