Sagehens Hold Off Concordia For 11-10 Win At Home

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team held off Concordia Irvine 11-10 in game two of their Saturday doubleheader at Haldeman Pool.
 
Season Impact:
with the win, the Sagehens extended their win streak to 12 games and improved to 20-10 overall.
 
The Sagehens had four players who shared a team-high two goals as Abigail Wiesenthal, Namlhun Jachung, Mia Amberger, and Paityn Richardson all had multi-goal games in the win. Kaylee Stigar, Gabby Lewis, and Natalie Sullivan Wu had one apiece while Zosia Amberger picked up the win in goal with seven saves and two steals.
 
The Sagehens had a huge first half to get the win over the Eagles with 10 of their 11 goals coming in the first half. The two teams started the game by alternating goals as Wiesenthal scored for the Sagehens with the score even at 1-1 with 4:43 to play in the first.  The Sagehens ended the first quarter with two goals from Jachung to take a 3-1 lead into the second.
 
The big quarter for the Sagehens was in the second where they outscored Concordia 7-1. Lewis, Amberger, and Richardson netted early goals to extend the lead to 6-1 before Concordia stopped the streak to make it 6-2.  The Sagehens went on to end the first half with four unanswered goals from Wiesenthal, Richardson, Amberger, and Sullivan Wu to take a 10-2 lead into halftime.
 
The offense slowed down for the Sagehens in the second half and Concordia started to chip away at the big lead.  Only one second-half goal for the Sagehens came off the hand of Stigar in the third as the Eagles outscored the Sagehens 2-1 in the third to make the score 11-4 heading into the fourth.
 
Despite their big first-half lead, the Sagehens found themselves in a one-score game late after Concordia scored six straight goals in the fourth quarter while shutting out the Sagehens' offense on the other end. The Eagles cut the game down to 11-10 with 33 seconds remaining, but the Sagehens were able to run out the rest of the clock to keep their win streak alive and come away with the win.
