REDLANDS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team came away with a Saturday doubleheader win with a 11-5 win over SCIAC opponent Redlands on Saturday afternoon at the Thompson Aquatics Center and a 12-10 win over Biola on Saturday evening at Haldeman Pool.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 11-10 overall and 4-0 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer 11, Redlands 5
The Sagehens were led by
Ayva Magna who netted a hat-trick with three goals in the win. Two other Sagehens had multi-goal games with
Sara Archer and
Lulu Gaither netting two goal while
Brienz Lang,
Gabby Lewis,
Natalie Sullivan Wu, and
Paityn Richardson had one each.
Thea Pine got the start and the win for the Sagehens with 13 saves and a steal.
The Sagehens started out with a monster first quarter and got more than half of their goals in the game in the first with six. Gaither netted the first two goals of the game while Lang and Magna joined with goals to get Pomona-Pitzer out to a 4-0 lead. The Sagehens continued to add to their lead in the first as Archer ended the first with two-straight goals to extend the lead to 6-0 at the end of the first quarter.
Richardson started the scoring in the second quarter to start the Sagehens out with a 7-0 advantage before Redlands scored their first goal of the goal with 5:44 left in the first half to make it 7-1. Redlands tied the Sagehens for goals in the second quarter with two each as Sullivan Wu got on the scoresheet late in the first half with the Sagehens taking an 8-2 lead into halftime.
The Sagehens' offense cooled off in the second half and the Bulldogs outscored the Sagehens 3-2 in the third to try to climb back into the game. Redlands scored to open the second half, but back-to-back goals from Magna and Lewis extended the lead back up to 10-3. The Bulldogs ended the third quarter with two goals to make it a five-goal game at 10-5 heading into the fourth.
Despite a productive second half from Redlands, Pomona-Pitzer shutout the Bulldogs in the fourth while adding a goal of their own from as Magna completed here hat-trick to keep the Sagehens perfect in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer 12, Biola 10
The Sagehens were led by
Abigail Wiesenthal and
Brienz Lang who each netted four goals for a hat-trick. Gaither also earned herself a hat-trick with three goals while
Kaylee Stigar had one in the win.
Zosia Amberger got the start in the cage and earned the win with 10 saves and two steals.
Gaither got the Sagehens on top early with a goal, but Biola answered on their next possession with their first of the game to even the score at 1-1 with two minutes gone in the first quarter. Wiesenthal put the Sagehens back on top with a goal, but the Eagles ended the first with two-straight goals to take a 3-2 lead into the second.
Biola had the advantage early on as they started the second with a goal to take a two-goal lead over the Sagehens and went on to extend that lead to 6-3 with 4:12 left to play until halftime. The Sagehens scored two goals in a row to end the first half from Lang and Wiesenthal to cut the lead down to one goal at 6-5 heading into halftime.
The Sagehens took over in the second half and immediately took the lead back after Wiesenthal opened the third with a goal and back-to-back goals from Lang made it 8-6 in favor of Pomona-Pitzer. Gaither scored the fourth-straight goal of the second half as the Sagehen defense shutout the Eagles in the third to take a 9-6 lead into the fourth.
Pomona-Pitzer continued to build their lead with goals from Gaither, Wiesenthal, and Stigar to make it nine-straight goals from the Sagehens to take a 12-6 lead. Biola came alive later in the game and scored four-straight goals to make it interesting at 12-10 with 41 seconds left, but the Sagehens big run was too much to overcome as Pomona-Pitzer held on for the win.
