CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team split day one of their Stag-Hen annual tournament with a 7-0 loss to Bowdoin and a 4-1 win over Southwestern on Friday afternoon at the Pauley Tennis Complex.
Season Impact: with the split, the Sagehens move to 5-6 overall this season.
Pomona-Pitzer 0, Bowdoin 7
The Sagehens had their hands full in the first game of the Stag-Hen hosting undefeated Bowdoin College. The Bears went on to take all three doubles matches while
Eshaan Lumba and
Matthew Feng gave the No. 1 doubles team a good run with a 7-6 loss.
Sam English and
Owen Kelley fell at No. 2 doubles 6-3 and
John Wehrle and
Neil Chulani lost 6-0 at No. 3.
After taking the doubles point, the Sagehens fell to Bowdoin in all six of the singles matches as well.
Lumba fell at the No. 1 position 6-1, 7-6 with Feng dropping his match at No. 2 6-3, 6-0 and
Rohun Krishnan lost his singles match at No. 3 6-3, 6-2. Both English and Chulani lost their matches by the scores of 6-4, 6-0 while Wehrle went three sets at No. 6 singles, but ultimately lost his match by the scores of 6-2, 3-6, 10-5.
Pomona-Pitzer 4, Southwestern 1
A long second match of the Stag-Hen was played to clinch due to lightning in the area with several individual matches ending early. The Sagehens did take two of the three matches in doubles and almost came away with the sweep as Lumba and Feng just narrowly fell at No. 1 doubles, 7-6.
English and Kelley took a win at No. 2 doubles 7-6 and Wehrle and Chulani glided to a 6-2 win to give the Sagehens a point heading into singles.
The sole win for Southwestern in singles came by way of retirement with Wehrle ending his match early at the No. 6 spot. Feng earned the Sagehens a win at No. 2 singles with a pair of 6-3 wins while Kelley won in three sets at No. 4 singles 6-3, 3-6, 6-2. Krishnan sealed the match for the Sagehens at the No. 5 singles with another three-set victory after he beat his opponent 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
