CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Baseball Team started out the first game of the Sixth Street Rivalry Series with a mammoth 14-1 victory over CMS in eight innings on Friday afternoon at Alumni Field.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 9-3 overall and 1-0 in SCIAC Play.
The Sagehens were led by
Greg Pierantoni and
William Kinney who each tallied three hits in the win.
Isaac Kim went 2-4 with his third home run of the season and
JC Ng went 1-3 with four RBIs with a grand slam to end the game for the Sagehens.
Jake Hilton got the ball for game one of the series and continued to pitch lights out for Pomona-Pitzer with six innings, giving up three hits and no earned runs with eight strikeouts to hand CMS their first loss of the season.
Eamonn Woods came in relief and threw two scoreless innings for another solid outing from the reliever.
The Sagehens got going early in their first at-bats as the freshman tandem on Pierantoni and Gold earned RBIs in their first plate appearances in the Sixth Street Rivalry to get the Sagehens on the board. Pierantoni doubled to center field to bring in the first run of the game and Gold followed with a two RBI double to right field to put the Sagehens up 3-0 after one inning of play.
The Sagehens came back with another three spot in the bottom of the second thanks to a three-run shot to left center by Kim to extend the lead to 6-0.
Pomona-Pitzer scored for the third-straight inning as Kinney singled home
Nate Jakobs and
Jimmy Legg doubled home
Matthew Nishimura to push the lead to a commanding 8-0 lead over CMS.
The Stags got one back in the top of the fifth off of a sacrifice fly to make it 8-1, but the Sagehens continued to tack on runs as Kinney walked with the bases loaded in the sixth and then singled home another run in the eighth to make it 10-1 as the Sagehens looked to run rule their rivals on their home field.
The Sagehens got their run rule and in glorious fashion as Ng connected for a grand slam over the right field fall as the Sagehens walked off for the 14-1 win over CMS at home.
