CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Basketball team earned their first SCIAC win of the season with a 62-55 win over Caltech on Saturday night at Voelkel Gymnasium.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens snapped their losing streak and improved to 4-17 overall and 1-11 in conference play.
The Sagehens were led by
Jadyn Lee who netted her seventh 20+ point game of the season with 20 points and eight rebounds in the win.
Emily Lee added 15 points while
Abigail Homan was also in double digits with 10.
Katie Drais also added valuable minutes with seven points and 10 rebounds with
Ali Bennett hitting two crucial threes with six points off the bench.
The Sagehens outshot Caltech from both the floor and three at 38.3% from the field and 36% from three with Caltech at 27.1% from the floor and 23.1% from three. Caltech held a slight rebound advantage at 41-38, but the Sagehens 22 points in the paint to Caltech's 18 and outscored them on fastbreak points 14-4.
A close first quarter between the two teams with the lead never exceeding more than two points in the first 10 minutes.
Jadyn Lee got the offense going with six of her 20 in the first quarter and
Emily Lee with five as the Sagehens went into the second down 17-16.
Caltech took a three-point lead to start the second, but an 8-0 run capped off by a
Jadyn Lee three put the Sagehens up 24-19 with 6:06 to play until halftime. The Sagehens stayed on top of Caltech and took a 31-22 lead with 2:34 to go in the second and went into halftime with a nine-point lead at 36-27.
The Beavers started to chip away at the lead in the third and got within four points at 38-34 early in the second half, but the Sagehens regrouped and got the lead back to 10 after a Homan three to make it 48-38. The Beavers made it interesting late as they cut into the lead with a 6-3 run to end the third with the Sagehens up 48-44 heading into the fourth.
Caltech started the fourth out well to get back within striking distance trailing by two points at 53-51 with 4:39 to play, but the Sagehens had some crucial baskets down the stretch by Lee and Homan and closed the game out at the line to earn their first SCIAC win of the season.
