IRVINE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Women's Water Polo team fell in a close contest to No. 13 Indiana 7-6 to end the Barbara Kalbus Tournament on Sunday morning at the Anteater Aquatics Center.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 4-6 overall.
The Sagehens were led by
Ayva Magna who had a team-high two goals in the loss while
Abigail Wiesenthal,
Kaylee Stigar,
Brienz Lang, and
Lulu Gaither had one.
In the second meeting this season between the Hoosiers and Sagehens, Pomona-Pitzer kept this one close until the very end looking for their second upset against the Hoosiers in the last two seasons.
The Sagehens got out to a good start against Indiana as Gaither netted the first goal of the game to give the Sagehens an early 1-0 lead. Indiana came back and netted back-to-back goals to end the first quarter to take a 2-1 lead into the second.
Each team had one goal in the second quarter as Stigar found the back of the net for the Sagehens in what was a low-scoring first half that saw the Hoosier up at halftime, 3-2.
Indiana came out in the second half with the first two goals of the third quarter to extend the lead to 5-2 before Magna netted back-to-back goals to get the Sagehens back to within one goal at 5-4. The Hoosiers went on to score the final goal of the third to take a two-goal lead at 6-4 heading into the fourth.
The Sagehens outscored the Hoosiers in the fourth and immediately got back into the game as Lang scored within the first two minutes to cut the lead down to 6-5. Indiana responded with a goal, but Wiesenthal got the Sagehens back to within striking distance at 7-6 with just under three minutes to play. Pomona-Pitzer's defense did a good job keeping them in the game late, but the offense could not come up with a game-tying goal late in the fourth quarter as the Sagehens fell in the 13
th place game of the Barbara Kalbus Tournament.
