ROCKY Mt, NC. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Tennis team fell to Johns Hopkins 7-2 and came back for a 7-2 win against Birmingham-Southern on Saturday afternoon at the Indoor Sports and Education Facility.
Pomona-Pitzer 2, Johns Hopkins 7
The Sagehens started out well in doubles with two of the three matches going in their favor.
Sam English and
Owen Kelley started the match off with an 8-4 at No. 2 doubles and
Neil Chulani and
Ethan Lee earned a close 8-6 win at the No. 3 position to start out 2-0. The No. 1 doubles team of
Eshaan Lumba and
Matthew Feng fell 8-6, but the Sagehens still lead 2-1.
Pomona-Pitzer would go on to fall in all of the singles matches against Johns Hopkins. English went on to lose his singles match at the No. 4 spot 6-2, 6-3 while
Rohun Krishnan lost at No. 3 6-3, 6-1. Lee lost his singles match at No. 1 6-2, 6-1 followed by Feng with a loss at No. 2, 6-4, 6-3.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to drop the final two matches of the day.
John Wehrle lost his match at the No. 6 position 6-1, 6-2 and Lumba ended the day for the Sagehens with a loss at No. 5, 6-1, 6-4.
Pomona-Pitzer 7, Birmingham-Southern 2
The Sagehens came back later in the day with a win over non-conference opponent Birmingham-Southern. Pomona-Pitzer started the match strong with all three of the doubles points to take a 3-0 lead into singles play.
Matthew Feng and
Eshaan Lumba won at the No. 1 position 8-6 while
Sam English and Owen Kelly won at No. 2, 8-3 and John Wehrl and
Neil Chulani won 8-2 at No. 3
After taking all three points heading into singles, the Sagehens went on to win four of their six matches against Birmingham-Southern. English doubled up on his wins with a singles victory at the No. 2 spot by the scores of 7-6, 6-2 and Lumba won at No. 3, 6-4, 7-6.
Pomona-Pitzer went on to win at the No. 5 and No. 6 singles spots as Chulani won both sets 6-2 while Wehrle ended the day with a 6-0, 6-2.
