LA VERNE, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team ended the regular season with a 73-58 win over SCIAC opponent La Verne on Tuesday night at The Tents.
Season Impact: With the win, the Sagehens improved to 19-6 overall and 12-4 in SCIAC play.
The Sagehens were led by
Joe Cookson who ended his regular season campaign with his seventh double-double of the season with 26 points and 10 rebounds.
Jasper Hedin tallied his third double-double of the season with 11 points and 11 rebounds while
Ty Bergman added 13 and
Pete Boyle with nine.
The Sagehens outshot La Verne from the field with 43.1% to the Leopards' 36.2%, but La Verne had a better night from beyond the arc with 36.4% with the Sagehens hitting on just 6-16 for 31.6%. Pomona-Pitzer controlled the paint outscoring La Verne 36-22 down low and outrebounded the Leopards 47-34.
The Sagehens started out with a nice run at 11-4 to start the game in the first five minutes. La Verne kept it close in the first half and even sparked a 10-2 run to take the lead from the Sagehens at 20-17 before the Sagehens responded with a 12-2 run of their own to take back the lead at 29-22 with five minutes to play until halftime. The Leopards made a late run again and cut into the lead at 35-32 with the Sagehens still up heading into halftime.
After letting the Leopards back into the game with a few big runs, the Sagehens looked to get ahead and stay ahead in the second half. Pomona-Pitzer took a ten-point lead at 45-35 four minutes into the second half and kept that 10-point advantage throughout the majority of the second half. The Sagehen defense prevented any major runs by La Verne in the second half and the Sagehens took a 70-51 lead with 4:09 to play to ensure they would come away with a win. The Leopards scored a few baskets late in the game, but the Sagehens rode their large second half lead to a road win in their final regular season contest.
