Box Score THOUSAND OAKS, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer Men's Basketball team fell to the top seed in the SCIAC, Cal Lutheran, 70-57 on Saturday afternoon at Gilbert Arena.
Season Impact: With the loss, the Sagehens fall to 18-6 overall and 11-4 in SCIAC play and are looking at the No. 3 seed in the upcoming SCIAC Postseason Tournament.
The Sagehens were led by
Ty Bergman who had 17 points and six rebounds in the loss. The Sagehens had three players with nine points as
Joe Cookson,
Pete Boyle and
Jasper Hedin all tallied the same amount.
The Sagehens shot 46% from the field and just 30% from three hitting on 6-20 from beyond the arc. Cal Lutheran outrebounded the Sagehens 35-27, but both teams had 28 points in the paint as the Kingsmen did their damage shooting the basketball. The Cal Lutheran bench also played a big role in the win with 21 points to the Sagehens' seven and Cal Lutheran did a great job taking care of the ball with just six turnovers in the game.
Pomona-Pitzer's offense struggled to get going in the first half and allowed Cal Lutheran to take a16-7 lead with just over five minutes gone in the first half. Cal Lutheran was able to go up over 10 for the first time in the game at26-24 with 8:11 in the first half. The Kingsmen continued to build their first half lead with a 10-4 run to go up 33-18 to force the Sagehens to try to dig themselves out of a hole. Pomona-Pitzer sparked a late 7-2 run to end the first half, but the Kingsmen still led by 10 at 35-25.
The Kingsmen didn't make it easy on the Sagehens to try to mount a comeback after they started the second half with a 9-3 run to take a 44-28. The Sagehens started the chip away at the lead and got the deficit down to 10 at 58-48 after a Boyle three-pointer with 5:20 to go, but Cal Lutheran strung together some baskets late in the game to hold off the Sagehens and hand the Sagehens their sixth loss of the season.
