Sagehens Close Non-Conference Play With A Victory Over Southwestern

CLAREMONT, CA. – The Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team defeated Southwestern University 64-55 on Saturday night in Claremont.

Season Impact: With the victory, the Sagehens are 4-2 overall.

The Sagehens had three players that scored in double figures. Joe Cookson led the way for the Sagehens with 23 points and four assists. Ty Bergman had 15 points, five steals, and two blocks and Pete Boyle dropped ten. The Sagehens trailed the Pirates most of the first half but ended up overcoming an early deficit thanks to Cookson and Bergman's dominance in the paint. In the first half alone, Bergman and Owen Avdalovic combined for a total of 17 rebounds. Matthew Diekman tied the game at 27-27 and Cookson gave the Sagehens their first lead of the game with one minute left in the first half, hitting a fast break jumper in the paint.

In the second half, the Sagehens extended their lead early with Ty Bergman and Pete Boyle capitalizing inside the paint. Cookson contributed with key assists and a critical three-pointer to maintain momentum for the Sagehens as they led 49 to 37. Despite a late push from the Pirates, the Sagehens sealed the game with clutch free throws from Cookson and Samir O'Brien to make the final score 64-55. 

Up Next: The Sagehens will open up SCIAC conference play on the road against Cal Lutheran on Wednesday, December 4th at 7:00 p.m.
