Men’s Basketball Cruises Past La Sierra, 95-59

CLAREMONT, Calif. — The Pomona-Pitzer men's basketball team cruised to a 95-59 win over La Sierra Thursday night behind 23 points apiece from Joe Cookson and Pete Boyle
 
Season Impact: The win improves the Sagehens' overall record to 3-1 on the season. 
 
Cookson reached 23 points on 6-of-9 shooting, including 5-of-7 from deep, to go with six rebounds, five assists and a steal. Boyle also scored 23 points on a perfect 5-of-5 shooting from three-point range, going 7-of-8 from the floor. Ty Bergman added 13 points and 12 rebounds for the Sagehens while Peyton Mullarkey had 11 points and five assists. 
 
As a team, Pomona-Pitzer shot 49.2% from the floor and 53.1% from three while holding the Golden Eagles to 37.7% shooting. The Sagehens also won the rebounding (40-21) and assist battles (20-12) while scoring 17 points off turnovers to La Sierra's eight. 
 
Pomona-Pitzer got out to an early 20-10 lead, behind three-pointers from Boyle, Mullarkey and Cookson. Cookson found Bergman for a basket before hitting another triple to give the Sagehens a 29-15 lead. Boyle hit another trey off a Samir O'Brien assist and Cookson got a driving layup to fall as Pomona-Pitzer led 43-28 at the half. 
 
The Golden Eagles cut the Sagehens' lead to 11, 45-34, early in the second half before a Bergman dunk extended Pomona-Pitzer's lead, 51-36. Mullarkey and O'Brien traded triples to then give the Sagehens a 62-39 advantage. Connor Fitzgerald knocked down a three of his own to give Pomona-Pitzer a 71-46 lead midway through the second half. 
 
Boyle and Cookson knocked down back-to-back three-pointers later in the half, both off assists from Mullarkey. Boyle hit another from distance before Reagan Cornish got a trey to fall, giving the Sagehens an 89-56 lead with 3:12 to go. Owen Avdalovic and Cooper Bladow added baskets late as Pomona-Pitzer came away with the 95-59 win. 
 
Up Next: The Sagehens remain home to take on Trinity University next Friday, Nov. 29, at 5:00 p.m. PT.
